straighteyebrows asked: Congrats on your engagement :) do you have any tips for finding the best shade of foundation or concealer when you can't try it in store?

Thank you! <3

It’s hard shopping at stores where you aren’t allowed to sample products before you buy them.  For this reason, I suggest that you DO go to a store where they will color match you to a foundation, like Sephora or MAC, even if you’re not going to buy their foundation.  Based upon their color recommendations, you will be able to learn necessary “buzz words” or identifying phrases about your skin tone!  For instance, they will probably be able to tell you your undertone, and can describe your skin in other terms as well (like porcelain, golden, deep, ivory, beige, etc).  These words will generally guide you in the right direction!  Also, once you’re color matched, you can usually look up similar shades on the internet (try Temptalia’s Foundation Matrix) or you can find a blogger with the same skin tone as you!

My second tip is to buy from a store with a great return policy.  Ask them right at the check out line how long you have to return a product, if it can be opened when returned, if you need to have the receipt, etc.  My favorite store to buy foundations at, because of this reason, is Rite Aid… they never give me a hard time.

When you’re in the store, bring a mirror with you.  Just a little pocket mirror.  Grab the two shades closest to what you think would be a match and hold the bottles up to your neck.  DO NOT color match to your arm or your hand… always your jawline/neck.  Although the packaging of the bottles WILL alter the color a little bit, you will still be able to see if one is too pink-toned or one is too orange for you.

And lastly, ALWAYS MAKE SURE you look up reviews of foundations before you buy them!  You may find that a foundation dries lighter than when it first applies, or that it oxidizes throughout the day and gets darker.  These are always factors you need to consider before settling on a color.  Use the app called “Consumr” to look up reviews in your pocket!

Hope this helps you!  It can be more work but the money you save will make all the trials and tribulations worth it!
