Build your Makeup Kit as you become more Experienced!
SO many people ask me how to get started with makeup, what products I recommend for beginners, and the staples that everyone should have in their kit. Well, here is an in-depth post telling you what to try and how to use it… in simplified language to help even you complete “noobs” understand how to start out in the wonderful world of makeup art!
LEVEL ONE: Beginner
Start out with the absolute basics, so that you can become accustomed to applying different types of makeup to all the areas of your face.
Tinted moisturizer - gets you accustomed to applying moisturizer before you put on your makeup, and gives sheer coverage to start evening out your skin tone. BB creams are essentially tinted moisturizers, so you could try them as well. Use your fingers to blend a small amount all over your face and down onto your neck to prevent any “foundation lines”.
Concealer - Use this on any areas of your face that you need more coverage, such as over blemishes, under your eyes, and around your nose and mouth. Put a tiny amount on your finger and pat - don’t rub - this onto your skin to blend. Concealer comes in stick, liquid or cream (jar) form.
Pencil Eyeliner - This will help you get used to applying things around your eyes, and will help bring more definition. Draw short dashes along your upper lashline as close to your lashes as possible, and then connect these lines to create a smooth shape.
Mascara - Mascara is one of the most important products you can use. Carefully apply this to your upper and lower lashes, using only one or two coats. Wiggle the brush at the base of your lashes first to add volume, and then bring up through to create length.
Lip Gloss or Tinted Balm - These will just add a little color to your lips without being too dramatic. Gloss will make your lips shiny and add sheer color. Balm moisturizes and creates just a light flush of color.
Mastered all of these products and their application? Now you can move on to the Amateur level and try out new items!
LEVEL TWO - Amateur
Now you can start experimenting with all different kinds of makeup, and more importantly, brushes! You’ve already figured out the bare basics, and it’s time to elevate your look. You DON’T need to (and probably shouldn’t) use all of these products at once, but try them out to see what you like and what you’re comfortable with wearing.
Foundation - Apply this instead of your tinted moisturizer (but make sure you’re moisturizing first!) in one thin layer all over your face, blending down onto your neck to prevent foundation lines. If you need more coverage in some areas, add a tiny bit of concealer and blend it over top. Foundation comes in liquid, cream, stick, and powder form (if you are using powder all over your face, apply concealer first)
Powder - Use a sheer pressed or loose powder in your T-zone to set your foundation and to prevent shininess. *Do not use powder if you have dry skin*
Blush and Bronzer - Apply a light wash of color to the apples of your cheeks. Pick colors that compliment your skin (if you are light skinned, go for lighter colors, dark skin - pick saturated tones). Apply just a small amount at first, and then build up the color to your liking.
Eyeshadow - Start out with a small quad of neutral colors, like browns and creams. Watch a few YouTube tutorials and learn different application techniques before you go for darker or brighter colors.
Liquid and/or Gel Eyeliner - This type of liner will create very clean, sharp lines. It can be tricky to learn how to apply, but is definitely worth mastering.
Lipstick - Lipstick is a fun, and really easy way to take your makeup look to the next level. Start out with muted pinks to compliment your skin tone before you move on to brighter shades like red, fuschia or coral. Click here to see how to find colors for your skin tone!
Brushes - Brushes are important for applying all of the products I’ve mentioned at this level. There are tons of different types of brushes out there, (click here to see my brush guide) but the absolute basics to start out with are foundation brushes, a powder brush, a blush brush, a flat eyeshadow brush, a blending eyeshadow brush, and an angled eyeliner brush.
Once you’ve mastered these products and their application techniques, you can move on to the more advanced products at the Novice level!
LEVEL THREE: Novice
Lip Liner - Once you’ve fallen in love with lipstick, lip liner is the next step you need to take to make sure your lips look as perfect as possible. Lip liner keeps your lipstick from fading or bleeding into fine lines around your mouth. You can also use liner to create ombre looks, or all over underneath your lipstick to make a different color.
Lip Stain - Lip stain is a great option for when you’re on the go, because it is long lasting. It provides a sheer, matte wash of color, and can be worn alone or with other lip products. You apply this like you’re coloring in your lips with a marker!
Brow Filler - Filling in your brows is important, especially if you’re going for a more full-on makeup look. They don’t need to look gaudy, just natural and full. You can use a brow pencil, or just a bit of eyeshadow with an angled brush.
Contour and Highlight - After you’ve learned how to apply blush and bronzer, you can finally move onto contouring. Contouring and highlighting helps define your cheekbones (and other parts of the face) to create a more defined shape. Use a matte bronzer as a contour, and a shimmery highlighter on the tops of your cheekbones.
Face Primer - Apply this all over your face underneath your foundation to fill in pores and fine lines. Primer acts as a barrier between your skin and your makeup, to help create a smoother, more long lasting makeup look.
Eye Primer - Apply a small amount to your lids and blend in before applying eye makeup. Primer smooths out your lids to help eyeshadow blend more smoothly and show up more vibrant. It also helps prevent creasing throughout the day.
Think you’ve mastered all of these elements and their application? Now you’re completely unlimited! Try out glitter, bright colors, crazy eye looks… test your boundaries. Makeup isn’t meant to be boring, it is an artform! Use it however you like, as long as it is for good.
March 2013 Ipsy Bag!
I just got my March Ipsy subscription today, and although the contents look a little lackluster compared to previous bags, I am still very pleased and excited to use everything I got!
Ipsy (formally MyGlam) is a monthly beauty service that sends 4-5 beauty products (usually trial sized, sometimes full size) to your doorstep for $10 per month. The value of the products you receive is always more than the subscription price, but the trick is that you never know what you’re going to get!
This month, I think that Ipsy assumed I’d be in some exotic location for spring vacation… the theme of the bag was “The Great Escape” The bag itself was a nautical-themed blue and white bag with an anchor design.
The items that came in my Ipsy bag:
- LA Fresh Travel-lite Makeup Remover Wipes (self explanatory)
- Juice Beauty Hydrating Mist (spritz on your face to add moisture and to refresh your look throughout the day)
- GlamRX Magnetic Fillable Palette (holds pans of eyeshadow by keeping them in place with magnets)
- 2 Yaby Eyeshadow Pans (small, meant to be put in the GlamRX palette)
Overall I think this is a very cool collection of products and definitely follows a good theme. I think that I will find a use for all of these items!
You can sign up for next month’s bag on Ipsy.com

Review: Wet n Wild H2O Proof Liquid Eyeliner

In my last month’s liquid eyeliner frenzy, I purchased this feeling as if I’d already had a lot of experience with it - even though I haven’t used it in probably two years or so. From what I’d remembered, this liner was waterproof, opaque and pretty glossy… great for cat eyes and days at the beach. Since Wet n Wild’s overall quality has improved vastly over the past year, I expected to be blown away by this.. but it appears that this old favorite has fallen by the wayside not only for me, but by the company as well.
Wet n Wild H2O Proof comes in four shades - Ultra Black, Black, Smoky and Espresso. You can find this and other Wet n Wild products at most drugstores or supermarkets, as well as online at sites like Ulta.com or Drugstore.com
Initially, I still enjoy using and applying this product. The brush is a pointed felt-tip that seems as though it might be too stiff and hard to apply comfortably, but ends up being very precise and not irritating at all. It is very easy to create both thick and thin lines. The bottle should be shaken immediately before use to mix the formula up (there is a mixing ball in the bottle to help you with this), and it goes onto the skin very opaque and shiny.

But this eyeliner shocked and disappointed me - the wear time and quality of the product has decreased tremendously since however-long-ago it was since I’ve used H2O Proof last! Even though it applies well, it smudges HORRIBLY onto my crease/socketbone area… I have deep set eyes, so this can be a problem with a lot of products, but from a waterproof eyeliner, you certainly don’t expect it. This didn’t occur after a few hours… it started to smudge within fifteen minutes. On the contrary, the line itself didn’t seem to fade or move around on my lashline at all, and the shape of the line didn’t alter through several hours. It was as if there was too much pigment in the liner itself, which caused the transfer onto my browbone. Very strange!

Swatches of Ultra Black
I also noticed that the liner is a bit thin. Even though it initially applies very opaque, if you don’t dip the brush back in the bottle after each stroke, it looks watery. It also looks very watery if you don’t shake the bottle of liner well beforehand.
The price is right, at only $3, but this product is not what I remembered! I’m very disappointed in the severe smudging I experienced. These liners are glossy and easy to apply, but are not what one might qualify as “waterproof”. Once upon a time this was an eyeliner I recommended highly, but I can’t say that anymore. This liner gets a 4/10

February ‘13 Hits & Misses!
It’s already March?! I’m not sure where the time’s going, but I can’t deny that I’m really excited for springtime! Anyway, it’s time for my monthly beauty product hits and misses… I’ve got a few new products to talk about as well as some oldies. Hope you enjoy!

I’ve got a LOT of hits this month - products that exceeded my expectations, that have just been released, and some that have been in my pile of favorites for months, if not years. Here we go!

Flower Beauty - Cosmetics by Drew Barrymore
I’m mentioning this line of beauty products first for a reason!! If you haven’t been listening to the beauty news buzz, Drew Barrymore recently released a full line of high quality cosmetics this year. Her line contains EVERYTHING… literally everything, from BB cream and lip butters, to eyeshadow quads and nail polish. Everything from Flower is 100% Cruelty Free, and is made from “the highest quality ingredients possible”… but that’s not even the best part! What’s really awesome about Flower Beauty is that these products are sold exclusively at Walmart and Walmart.com
Flower products are probably considered to be at the “higher end” of the drugstore makeup scale, and their price reflects that - you should expect to pay anywhere from $6-$13 for each item, but you STILL can’t beat that price for the awesome quality of all these products. Everything, from the lipsticks to the cream eyeshadows, has awesome pigmentation and texture, and all perform beautifully. If you don’t believe that anything of high quality could be sold at Walmart only, read this excerpt from FlowerBeauty.com:
“You no longer have to spend a lot of money to get the quality cosmetics you want and deserve.
How do we do it? We do not pay for advertising. Where other beauty brands spend a vast percentage of the cost of their products on ads, we do not. Drew, as an owner of the brand, takes pride in promoting Flower, which in turn allows us to put all of our resources into the formulas and packaging, and not into advertising.”
And a quote from Drew Barrymore herself:
” The reason I have created this makeup line is because… I wanted to give women the finest formulas. They deserve that level of quality, and I wanted to be the brand that gave it to them.”
Needless to say, I plan on trying as much as I can from this line, and backing it 100% until I see reason to do otherwise! They’re not in EVERY Walmart yet (including the ones close to me) but they will be soon! And when they do, I highly recommend checking Flower out.

New York Color Liquid Eyeliner
This eyeliner has been around for ages! It was in fact the first liquid eyeliner I ever tried, and even though I’ve used countless others since I first got into makeup, this little cheapie has been a constant in my collection. Lately I’ve been seeing tons of other makeup artists and beauty gurus mentioning/using this as well, and it’s really made me realize how incredibly awesome this eyeliner really is - not just because it’s affordable, but because the quality is there!
But the real reason I wanted to mention it this month is because for the past month I’ve gone without it - and been desperate to get it back! Mysteriously I lost my tube of it, and decided that this was a great opportunity to break out of my box and try all these new liquid liners on the market! I got ones from Wet n Wild, Maybelline, L’Oreal and Urban Decay… and I was disappointed in just about ALL of them! It really made me appreciate my little $3 NYC liner that much more.
NYC Liquid Liner has an awesome, fine-tipped brush that makes the perfect line every time. The formula is really glossy and opaque - never streaky, never dull, and it never bleeds into the fine lines on your skin or transfers onto your browbone after a couple hours of wear. It doesn’t smudge or flake off prematurely, and it washes away so easily at the end of the day! All for $3! You just can’t beat that, and I don’t think I’ll be parting with this liner anytime soon again!

Wet n Wild Fergie Collection Take On The Day Eyeshadow Primer
You guys wanted a new, high quality eyeshadow primer from the drugstore, and WnW delivered! In fact, the entire Fergie Collection recently released by Wet n Wild looks absolutely spectacular, but like with Flower, I can’t find it anywhere near me yet! *Cries* However I did manage to find this primer, and I’m really happy I did.
This is a rather thick but blendable, light skintone-colored primer for your eyelids. It is designed to prep your lids for eyeshadow, smoothing the skin and helping the colors show up better. It also helps prevent creasing throughout the day. I think that this primer works really well! It isn’t greasy at all and I didn’t notice any creasing whatsoever when I used it. It helps eyeshadows pop a lot more and blend easily. And of course, because it’s from Wet n Wild, it’s only $5.

Urban Decay The Great and Powerful Oz “Glinda” Palette
Gee, another Urban Decay palette that makes my favorite list - imagine that! At first, when the Oz palettes were released by UD (This and the “Theodora” palette, which contains “bad witch” colors) I was very skeptical, because I assumed these would just be bad promotion techniques for the movie, which will be in theaters March 8th. But when I went to Ulta and swatched them, I couldn’t help but fall in love. Initially Theodora was the palette I had my eye on, but I turned to Glinda because I don’t think I’ve ever owned a really feminine, lightly colored palette like this.
The Glinda palette contains 8 different colors (but there are only 6 pans, what?! Two pans are duos) and also comes with a travel-sized 24/7 Eyeliner pencil in a deep eggplant shade and a pretty peachy-pink Super Saturated lipcolor pencil. The colors are typical Urban Decay - very soft and buttery, but do tend to have a bit of fallout. However the colors themselves are dreamy and angelic - you can create really light, angelic looks or bring in some drama for dark or smokey types of eyes. I laaahhhv it!

Milani Color Statement Lipsticks
Drugstore brands are doing a lot of good with me lately, particularly in the lipstick department. Milani has long been one of my favorite underrated brands (see: Liquif’eye Pencil Eyeliner) and these lipsticks are REALLY impeccable!
The texture of these lippies is divine - they require minimal effort to yield awesome color payoff. The formulas are opaque and pigmented - very soft and smooth to apply on your lips. They feel moisturizing on, and last several hours before they begin to fade away. The colors are great - there are 38 Color Statement lipsticks, varying from deep creamy red, to bright violet, to frosty pink, and include not-your-average shades like gold and almost-black berry. Each only cost $6, and are well worth your money! Beauty gurus and MUAs alike are raving about these across all types of social media, and you need to have them in your life.

Lonjure False Eyelashes
Lonjure is a relatively new brand that produces high quality lashes that are appropriate for any occasion. I was introduced to this brand about a month and a half ago, and have been obsessed with them ever since! I don’t wear falsies every day, although I will pop them on occasionally just for fun - I still haven’t been able to use up all of these gorgeous lashes!
Lonjure has 12 different styles of lashes, with four in each collection - Natural, Length, and Volume. Their lashes are made with natural and synthetic hair, and will fit any sized eye. The lashes don’t come with glue, but it’s probably better that way because I am never satisfied with the glue that comes gratis and it usually affects my overall opinion of the lashes themselves. The only problem I’ve experienced with these lashes is that the glue used to adhere each lash to the packaging is a little excessive and makes the band stiff when you first remove them. With a little bending to loosen them up, they become very easy to apply! I don’t have a single favorite yet, but I haven’t found one that I don’t like yet, either! You can find them on http://lonjure.com for $4.98 a piece!

Something you NEED to do the Next Time you have a Free Moment…
CLEAN YOUR MAKEUP BRUSHES!!!

To those of you who are side-eyeing this post saying “Please, I wash mine all the time, duh!” ….a slow clap for you. You are among the few.
To those of you who are sitting there guiltily behind your computer screen because NEVER ONCE have you washed your brushes… shame on you! It’s so easy (and important) to do, you really have no excuse. Read on to learn how, when, and why you need to keep your brushes clean!
——————————————————
Believe it or not, you DON’T need some fancy, expensive cleaner made specially for makeup brushes. In fact, the items you need are probably already hiding in your kitchen!
- Antibacterial hand soap or dish soap… gentle formulas are best, but not necessarily required
- Olive oil or baby oil
- Paper towels
- Mug, or some other container to dry brushes in
For most brushes, particularly ones with synthetic bristles, all you need is your antibacterial soap. As long as you don’t wash them too vigorously, submerge them in water, or dry them incorrectly, you’re not going to hurt your brushes at all by washing them with just this basic ingredient.
- Start by running your brushes under warm water. Make sure you point your brushes downwards and don’t allow water to work it’s way up into the ferrule, which is the metal part of your brush where the bristles are fastened in place. If you do get water up there, it could ruin the glue that holds the bristles in place, and make them fall out.
- Put a tiny amount of antibacterial soap into the palm of your hand, and swirl your wet brush through the soap. Be gentle, but don’t be afraid to really work the soap into the bristles to get them clean (of course, make sure you don’t get water/soap in the ferrule!)
- Rinse the soap out of your brushes completely, and then if necessary, repeat the same process. Remember that after you’ve used your brushes a couple times, they probably won’t go back to the same beautiful color they were when they were brand new, but you can get them pretty close.
- If your foundation or some other stubborn makeup just won’t come out of your brush, it’s time to break out the oil. Put a very small amount in the palm of your hand, and work it gently into your brush as you did your soap. This should make the makeup melt out, quite literally! A little squeezing and another soaping up should get your brushes nice and clean. The oil can be difficult to get out completely, but definitely not impossible.
- Drying your brushes properly is very important. Gently squeeze out excess water with a paper towel, and then dry them upside down (with the bristles pointing downward) in some sort of container. This way the water will come out of the brush, instead of running down into the ferrule!
Ideally, you would wash your brushes after every use - of course this is pretty impossible for most people, so once a week is the goal. AT LEAST. Going weeks, or months, without washing your brushes is honestly pretty gross. Your makeup brushes don’t just pick up makeup, but also oil and dirt from your face, dust and bacteria from the air around you and the containers they’re stored in. Every time you use your brush, all of those things are transferred onto your skin. Dirty brushes can cause breakouts, infections, and all kinds of unfortunate things that could otherwise be easily prevented!
Dirty brushes can also manipulate your makeup application, because products won’t go on as smoothly as they would with a clean brush. The more often you wash your brushes, the longer your brushes will last!
So go! Go now! Get off the computer and spend 5-10 minutes to benefit your skin, your makeup, and your health! I promise it’s worth it.
