Hi there I'm new to your blog but taking notes and planning a haul! I have 2 questions for you, first where can I find Elf brand in the US and second can you recommend a brush starter kit? Thank you and keep up the good work! Shaunalee24

Hello Shauna! Thanks, I’m really glad you’re enjoying my site and are finding cool products!! That’s what it’s all about :)
For your first question - you can find ELF products (mostly the Studio line) at Kmart and Target stores. You can also find some products at certain Walmarts or Dollar Trees! A lot of it is hit or miss, sometimes I discover a couple ELF items at random stores. The best place to get ELF is online however - they will often have huge sales, like free shipping or 50% off. Right now they are offering a huge makeup set for only $2.50 additionally to any $25 order! The ELF site is here.
Your second question - makeup brush kits for beginners! When you’re just starting out, you should get an even mix of both eye and face brushes. Generally my recommended kit would contain:
- Powder brush
- Blush/bronzer brush
- Foundation brush (flat, stippling, buffing, whichever you like)
- Flat eyeshadow shader brush
- Fluffy eyeshadow blending brush
- Small eyeshadow pencil brush
- Angled eyeliner brush
(For information about brushes.. what they look like and how they work.. click here!)
ELF is a great starter brand for brushes, as they carry brushes from $1-$6ish, and the $3 Studio line is really great. You can get individual brushes or a whole beginner’s set online!

ELF 11pc Studio Set - $20
Other great brands/sets:

Real Techniques (Core Collection shown) - found at Ulta & Walmart

BH Cosmetics 12pc Brush Set - Pink & Purple sets on sale for $15 right now!

EcoTools sets - found at most drugstores and grocery stores
More good brands include NYX, Revlon, Coastal Scents, Sedona Lace, Sigma, Crown Brush, and the Forever 21 brand. When starting out you don’t need to make the investment in “designer” brushes, like those from MAC, and chances are once you do start splurging on brushes you’ll still find yourself reaching for your old cheapies!

If you’ve been waiting to get yourself a large eyeshadow palette for some reason, now is the time to buy… these are really great deals. I have several palettes from BH Cosmetics that I use almost every day, on myself and on clients. They are a great value and are actually very good quality. I highly recommend them, and as always, I wouldn’t try to get you to buy something that I didn’t wholeheartedly believe in.
So go check out the deals… www.BHCosmetics.com!
So I'm looking for a inexpensive set of brushes, I am comparing the E.L.F 11 piece Studio set and the 24 piece synthetic signature set from bhcosmetics. Which do you recommend?

My immediate reaction is to say that the BH Cosmetics set is a much better deal, because it is currently on sale and has a great variety of eyeshadow brushes.. but it doesn’t have any type of foundation brush, which could pose an issue if you are looking for a complete starter kit ($28, regularly $45, on BHCosmetics.com)

The ELF Studio Set is on sale right at this moment as well, but the sale ends tomorrow 2/11/13. Obviously it’s not as many brushes, but you do get foundation brushes, and it is a good option if you don’t want to spend a lot of money.
($15, regularly $30, on EyesLipsFace.com)

Both of them are of pretty much equal quality, which is very good for the price (and good for most any price, really). Both have very soft bristles and apply makeup well! It depends on what you’re wanting to spend, and which set you see as “worth it”.

It really depends on your personal preference. Each one has a different variety of colors - I have a comparison post HERE if you want to check it out.
My favorites would be 120 Palette 1st Edition and 3rd Edition, but I like the 2nd Edition as well (not helpful, am I?) 1 and 2 have the best selection of colors (every color of the rainbow), and 3 has an even amount of neutral shades and brights… since I’m a neutral lover, this is probably my most-used one out of all the 120s I’ve had.

(3rd Edition above)

Yes, and yes. BH Cosmetics eyeshadows are lovely to work with, they go on vibrantly and blend to perfection without getting muddy.
There are 40 colors… for $10.77… that’s like .26 cents per eyeshadow. You can’t get that kind of a deal on any other product, and they’re well worth five times that much.

BH Cosmetics Party Girl Palette! Thanks for letting me know about the sale, I’m so happy!

The 88 Neutral Palette is one of my personal favorites, and I use it almost daily. The quality of these eyeshadows is quite good… they are pigmented and very blendable. Plus you get almost 8 times the eyeshadows (for 1/4 the cost) as you would with the Naked palette… definitely an inexpensive option for those of you craving a gorgeous palette perfect for any occasion. **Click here for the link to the sale!**
You’re also getting a great liquid liner… it is a felt tip, marker-type liner that is very pigmented and smudge resistant, perfect for any look!
Normally this bundle would cost over $40, but for a limited time they’re available for only $13. (Plus shipping is inexpensive and very fast) Check it out!

I’ve had this brush for quite a while! It’s only $6.95 regularly and is almost always on sale on BHCosmetics.com. The brush is well-made and very sturdy. The synthetic bristles are quite soft, and the brush itself is thick, making it a great tool for buffing on foundation. It’s also good for applying and blending cream blush, bronzer or highlights! It’s not my #1 foundation brush, but I do use it often, and it is definitely a good buy!
have you tried the coastal scents 22 piece brush set ? if so, what do you think of it ?

mimitwotimes |
I don’t have the Coastal Scents kit, but I do have several of the brushes that come in the kit. The kit itself has brushes that are a mixture of synthetic and natural hair, which you don’t usually find in brush kits. There is one of almost everything you’d need in this kit, as well as a convenient roll-up case.

$34 from CoastalScents.com
I do have a very comparable kit from BH Cosmetics… a 24 piece kit. All of these brushes have synthetic hair and the case is considerably more heavy duty. This set is on sale right now for $33!

Both of these are great kits for a beginner who wants to experiment more with brush techniques, as well as everyday use or for people who are beginning freelance makeup artistry.
I was wondering, what's your favorite of the 120 palettes from BH cosmetics? Love your blog, by the way.

Oh gosh, I love them all really! BH Cosmetics palettes are inexpensive, surprisingly good quality, and SO useful. Each of the 5 versions differs, and it is really all up to personal preference!
1st Edition:

(Every color of the rainbow, coordinated nicely. I had this once and broke it :’[)
2nd Edition:

(Every color of the rainbow again, focused more on tonal values when coordinated. I have this one currently and find the arrangement annoying!)
3rd Edition:

(This is a perfectly arranged palette.. one tray of brights, and one tray of neutrals. Everything you could possibly need. I need this one.)
4th Edition:

(Interesting, saturated colors. I would love this one, because the shades are so rich, but it’s coordinated very poorly.)
5th Edition:

(There are almost no blues or greens in this palette… which is odd. It’s coordinated strangely, but not horribly.)
————————————————
Overall, I would recommend the 1st and 3rd edition palettes the most! But they’re all great quality, and I can’t speak for the color preferences of everyone.
