There are several more I want to try!  But if I got all of the ones I wanted to try out at once I’d be broke haha.

Hi there I'm new to your blog but taking notes and planning a haul! I have 2 questions for you, first where can I find Elf brand in the US and second can you recommend a brush starter kit? Thank you and keep up the good work! Shaunalee24
shaunalee24

Hello Shauna!  Thanks, I’m really glad you’re enjoying my site and are finding cool products!!  That’s what it’s all about :)

For your first question - you can find ELF products (mostly the Studio line) at Kmart and Target stores.  You can also find some products at certain Walmarts or Dollar Trees!  A lot of it is hit or miss, sometimes I discover a couple ELF items at random stores.  The best place to get ELF is online however - they will often have huge sales, like free shipping or 50% off.  Right now they are offering a huge makeup set for only $2.50 additionally to any $25 order!  The ELF site is here.

Your second question - makeup brush kits for beginners!  When you’re just starting out, you should get an even mix of both eye and face brushes.  Generally my recommended kit would contain:

  • Powder brush
  • Blush/bronzer brush
  • Foundation brush (flat, stippling, buffing, whichever you like)
  • Flat eyeshadow shader brush
  • Fluffy eyeshadow blending brush
  • Small eyeshadow pencil brush
  • Angled eyeliner brush

(For information about brushes.. what they look like and how they work.. click here!)

ELF is a great starter brand for brushes, as they carry brushes from $1-$6ish, and the $3 Studio line is really great.  You can get individual brushes or a whole beginner’s set online!

image

ELF 11pc Studio Set - $20

Other great brands/sets:

image

Real Techniques (Core Collection shown) - found at Ulta & Walmart

image

BH Cosmetics 12pc Brush Set - Pink & Purple sets on sale for $15 right now!

image

EcoTools sets - found at most drugstores and grocery stores

More good brands include NYX, Revlon, Coastal Scents, Sedona Lace, Sigma, Crown Brush, and the Forever 21 brand.  When starting out you don’t need to make the investment in “designer” brushes, like those from MAC, and chances are once you do start splurging on brushes you’ll still find yourself reaching for your old cheapies!

I know I'm never going to catch you probably because of all your questions you get, but I still keep trying because I hope one day you'll get my questions. So I just recently started using lipstick. I'm pretty new to makeup in general but I found CoverGirl's Lip Perfection in Enchantress and fell in love. I was wondering what other lipsticks you would recommend. I really like those bright pinks and love how moisturized it made my lip while I was wearing it.
reefviewsbykaity

Hi hon!  Today is your day, haha!

image

Covergirl Lip Perfection lipstick in Enchantress - $7

I love CG Lip Perfection lipsticks… they are creamy and moisturizing and still pack a punch of color!  Enchantress is a really gorgeous blue-toned pink that would compliment any skin tone.  If you like that color and consistency, then you would probably like these (not the same colors, of course, but similar that would probably look good on you):

image

Maybelline ColorSensational in Party Pink

image

Maybelline Color Whisper in Petal Rebel

image

Maybelline Color Whisper in Pinup Peach

image

Revlon SuperLustrous in Wink for Pink

image

Rimmel Moisture Renew in Pink Chic

image

Milani Color Statement in Fruit Punch

And even if you don’t like those colors necessarily, you will certainly like those brands/lines of lipstick, because they are all creamy and very similar to the Covergirl ones.  :)

Perfect Prom Makeup - For ANY DRESS, ANY HAIR COLOR, ANY SKIN TONE

In my opinion, this video by LaurenBeautyy on YouTube is the epitome of perfect prom makeup… it is youthful and bright, yet sultry and smokey at the same time.  The colors used will compliment any person and any dress, and the technique is simple enough that anyone can do it.

The products she uses are - the Urban Decay Naked Palette, an Essence cream eyeshadow, Maybelline Liquid Eyeliner, Revlon Pencil eyeliner, Maybelline mascara, and NYX lipstick.  Most of these are easily accessible and well within everyone’s budget, if you don’t have similar items already!

If you don’t have the Naked palette, for this look I think that the Maybelline Eye Studio Explosion palette in Caffeine Rush would work as a good replacement! (not a dupe of the palette but contains all the colors needed for this look)

PROM MAKEUP TIPS:

  • Use a foundation with little to no SPF in it to prevent getting a white cast in pictures.  If you can’t get a new foundation without SPF, use a powder without SPF over top, and warm up your skin with bronzer.
  • Matte is your other date!  Keep your face and eyeshadow mostly matte, with hints of shimmer and highlight on important places (cheekbones, eyelids, cupids bow, etc)  Matte products photograph much better, and keep you from looking like a disco ball at the end of the night.
  • Don’t use false eyelashes if you’ve never worn them before.  If you really want to wear them, practice applying and wearing them a couple times before the big day!  Getting to know what they feel like on your eyes is key to being comfortable and looking fab.
  • Warm up your skin with bronzer to keep you from looking dead in the face!  Flash photography is not your friend, so you have to plan ahead so you won’t have to “untag” yourself later.  Pick a bronzer that suits your skin tone and doesn’t have an orange undertone (pro tip.. get a face powder that’s a few shades too dark instead of bronzer).  Apply this in the hollows of your cheeks, and along your hairline mainly.  Make sure you blend it out so it looks natural!!

WHAT TO BRING ON PROM NIGHT:

  1. Powder compact - this will serve as both a mirror and as a touch up to keep you from getting too shiny.  Believe me, this will be a godsend after a night of dancing!
  2. Your lipstick and/or gloss - because no matter what product you choose, it will fade after a night of laughing, eating, drinking, dancing, and perhaps even kissing.
  3. Eyelash curler - you don’t want to be adding more mascara on throughout the night, because then you will be giving yourself clumpy lashes and you might mess up your eyeshadow!  A quick curl after a couple of hours will keep your makeup looking fresh and perfect.
  4. IF YOU WEAR FALSIES - bring eyeliner with you as a precaution. If one of your lashes starts to get funky or falls off from dancing, just take them off and fix up the glue line with your eyeliner.  No one will know!

Have fun!

Updo’s for Short Hair - You Can Do It!

Stumped on how to glamify your short hair for prom?  It is totally possible.. and you can even do it yourself!  All you need are tons of bobby pins in your hair color, some hairspray, a curling iron, and a few accessories of your liking - maybe a hair band or ribbon, flower clip, etc.

Now sit back and edjimicate yourselves!  Here’s a few tutorials I’ve picked out that I think look cute, modern, and are totally achievable.

Lately I’ve Been Obsessed With: GLOWY SKIN!

image

What’s not to love?  Doesn’t everyone want skin that looks so fresh and flawless?  That natural highlight, subtle catch of light, and the look of being bright and energetic… even if you’re totally faking it!

The idea of glowing skin is actually something that I’ve previously avoided, considering that my skin type varies between oily and oilier… my instincts have always been “matte matte matte!”  But something has gotten into me.. perhaps my serious longing for springtime and warm weather (which still isn’t here in Upstate NY!)… and that gorgeous glow has been part of my makeup routine daily!  Here’s a few tips, tricks, and products that I’ve been using and loving lately.
