themoonlitmagnolia asked: Hi! Do you know of any dupes for the Sephora Luster Matte Lip Color?

Hello!  I love those Luster Mattes… the texture of them is so nice!  It’s creamy and they don’t feel dry on your lips, but they have a really nice opaque, matte finish.  The closest thing I can think of to compare them are the NYX Xtreme Lip Creams, because they’re comfortable and still have a really good color payoff and decent staying power.

image

With a $10 price difference, the NYX lippies are definitely going to be kinder to your wallet.  However the NYX ones aren’t as matte as the Sephora Luster Mattes are, even though I wouldn’t say the Luster Mattes are a true, full matte lipstick.  If you blot your lips after applying the NYX creams though, the effect will be almost identical.  They even have similar colors!

I’ll also just throw this out there - some people consider the Sephora Luster Mattes dupes for the Lime Crime Velvetines… they’re not.  Not in the least.  They’re really pretty on the lips but they don’t have staying power that’s really incredible or anything!

Hope that helps!

Review + Swatches: NYX Wicked Lippies

What they Are - 12 unusual, Jewel-toned lipsticks with a metallic finish

Where to Get Them - Currently only available on nyxcosmetics.com

What They Cost - $6 each

Quick Verdict - Thumbs Up!

I was so excited when I first learned about the launch of this line… NYX has been on a roll lately with the unusual lipstick trend!  The swatches of these lipsticks really sucked me in, but I was worried about the “shimmering” and the “metallic finish”, and only purchased three colors to start with (instant regret… I need them ALL!)

These lipsticks are very nicely pigmented, and are very very creamy.  The slipperiness is almost difficult to work with - you have to really take your time and be careful when applying so that these intense colors don’t wander all over your face.  I highly recommend using lip liner with these lipsticks, to keep them in place and to prevent premature fading.  No, NYX hasn’t released any corresponding lip liners (that would be cool!) so you might have to use eyeliner (don’t eat it) or just use a clear lip liner to prevent bleeding.

Here are the swatches:

BETRAYAL - A deep vamp purple with a pearl finish.  This is the most “normal” of the three I purchased!

RISQUE - A deep, metallic forrest green.  I CANT EVEN with this shade.  The sheen this has is absolute perfection.

COLD HEARTED - Deep metallic granite with a silver shimmer.  This is my favorite… I’d say it’s like a gunmetal color, super shiny but not “frosty” if you know what I mean.  There is no glitter, it’s very sexy.

All of these swatches were done WITHOUT lip liner so that you could see the colors as true as possible… and you can see the struggles I had keeping these lipsticks within the lines.  They’re really slick, and if you’re not careful, they’ll get on your teeth!  These are pretty high maintenance, but let’s be real - it’s so worth it!!!

There are 12 colors in all, each one more amazing than the last:

(Image via nyxcosmetics.com)

I need them all.  Will I wear them out to the grocery store?  Probably not, but I will wear them around my house and duck face in every mirror I encounter.

laviniamannons asked: Hi! I have a question! :) I have a thin upper lip and pretty much every time I wear lipstick, it looks like I have giant clown lips, because I end up putting too much on. Is there any sort of lipstick/lip product that would be good for me and correct this issue? Thanks so much!

Hello!  Hopefully I have an answer ;)

Lip liner is your friend!!  You can use lip liner to map out the shape of your lips without using a big, slippery lipstick tube.  This will also help you even out your lips and will keep your lipstick from wandering farther than you’d like it to, avoiding the clown-lip-conundrum.

image

Milani Color Statement Lip Liner - $4

Since your upper lip is thin, I recommend lining directly on top of your lip line.  If you look at your lips closely, you can see a ridge all around your lips, that might be separate from where the color of your lips ends.  That is your lip line.  Balance out a fuller lower lip by lining just inside your lip line.  Making your upper and lower lips more proportional will keep your lipstick looks from getting too big!

Bold lips are everything, don’t let anything hold you back from rocking them!

poundcakelove asked: I'd like to rock a bright pink lipstick for halloween this year. Any suggestions for making it pop? Just applying a lipstick doesn't appear to do enough. Thanks!

Hi there!  Colors will always show up brighter if you use a white base, whether we’re talking lipsticks or eyeshadows.  If you have a white eyeshadow base already, you can certainly use that on your lips - or I recommend trying a white eyeliner pencil!

White eyeliner pencils will be practical for you to have on an everyday basis, because they brighten up everything and make for a great highlight on your waterline with any eye look.  For your lipstick, I suggest outlining and completely filling in your lips with your white eyeliner first, blotting away any excess with a tissue, and then applying your lipstick over top!  The white base should make the pink color look a bit more neon.

image

If that’s still not enough, try outlining your lips very lightly with the white liner.  This will add dimension to the lips and make the shape look more prominent, as well as making the color stand out more.

I hope that works out for you!! Have a great Halloween!!

jossdaboss216 asked: Do you have any recommendations for a natural pair of false lashes ? I really want to try wearing them but they always look ridiculous

The best-looking false lashes are the ones that blend right in with your natural lashes.  That could mean that they are very dramatic, or not - but make sure that you are getting natural hair lashes, not plastic ones, because the texture doesn’t bend with your eyes properly.

Also look for a style of lash where all of the lashes are different lengths, instead of all being the same length or blunt cut.  Varied lengths between the lashes will look much more natural, whether the lashes are very sparse and natural or thick and dramatic.

image

Ardell 108 Lashes - $4

Lashes that have a clear band, like the ones shown above, are also a bit easier to use and blend in with your natural lashes a bit better than those that have a thick black band where the lashes connect.

I don’t think that the brand (or price) of false lashes really matters, as long as you find the right shape.  Also, don’t be afraid to trim lashes that are too long for you - that can make all the difference in the world!  Hold the lashes on your eyes to measure, and then snip off little by little from the outer corner (not the inner!) to custom create the perfect size lash.

Hope this helps you! :)

9 Kylie Jenner Lipsticks Under $9 (You’re Welcome)
Kylie Jenner’s amazing makeup transformation has inspired thousands of beauty junkies around the world - she blossomed into a true mini-Kardashian with just a tweak of her makeup application.  The main focus of everyone’s adoration are Kylie’s lips.  They’re full, matte, pouty, and the color is effortless perfection.  In this post you’ll see how you can get Kylie’s lip look for LESS!
If you don’t want to dabble with “dupes”, word on the street is that Kylie uses MAC Whirl lip liner, along with Velvet Teddy, Brave, or Twig lipsticks.  Her look is very brown-toned rosy-mauve toned.  Her look changes often but I think what people are loving about her look is how natural her lips look, without being totally washed-out nude!
Lip liner is a very important part of this look.  Kylie overlines and completely reshapes her look with her lip liner - often she uses just lip liner all over her lips.  The look is to create lips that look very round, with a top lip that is just as full and pouty as a bottom lip.  Kylie rounds off her cupids bow quite a bit, and definitely lines the outside of her lip line rather than the inside.
Here are my picks for drugstore lipsticks:
1.  Maybelline Creamy Matte lipstick in Touch of Spice
2.  Milani Color Statement Lip Liner in Natural
3.  NYX Lip Liner Pencil in Mauve
4.  Jordana Matte Lipstick in Taupe
5.  Maybelline Color Sensational lipstick in Crazy for Coffee
6.  Revlon SuperLustrous Matte lipstick in Pink Pout
7.  NYX Matte Lipstick in Whipped Caviar
8.  Wet n Wild MegaLast lipstick in Mochalicious
9.  NYC Expert Last Lipcolor in Creamy Caramel
All of these lipsticks are different colors, but all will give you a similar look.  Some are slightly more pink-toned, whereas others have more brown in them.  The ones you prefer will depend on your skin tone and preference!  Enjoy!

benaddicted-and-hiddlestoned asked: Dupes for Clinique Black Honey? I would be eternally grateful. P.S. I love that you're back on the blog <3

Hi there, thank youu!

Everyone asks me about Black Honey, so I finally went and hunted it down to try it for myself.  I love that the color is buildable, and because it’s naturally sheer it looks different on everyone.  I found a couple of colors in my stash that look and feel really similar, for a lot less -

image

Revlon Lip Butter in Fig Jam - $8 (Shockingly enough this is also the most popular “dupe” according to the internet.  I find that this is just slightly more brown!)

Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm in Red Dahlia - $5 (This is one of my casual day standbys.  I like that this is really hydrating and has SPF just like the Clinique lipstick, for $10 less!)

You can get both of these dupes at most drugstores, or online.

ifeltyourwavves-deactivated2014 asked: Using rimmel stay matte mousse and love the coverage.. But how can I keep it from looking so dry around the sides of my nose? In between this foundation and revlon colorstay whipped..

With a fast-drying matte foundation like the Rimmel one, you’re definitely at risk for flake-accenutation.  Make sure you’re gently exfoliating your flakey areas and moisturizing your skin before you apply your makeup!  Using a good moisturizer will completely change the way your makeup looks on your skin… for the better!

image

Clean & Clear Pore Perfecting Oil Free Moisturizer SPF 15 - $7

If you’re already doing that, the best way to reduce the emphasis of dry patches is to actually mix a tiny amount of your foundation with a tiny amount of moisturizer and use that as a concealer over top.  Pat this mixture in with your finger instead of wiping it around so that you don’t irritate your skin, and the emollient formula should smooth out your skin nicely without changing the amount of coverage you have!  :)

Ugh, such a hard question!  I’m the type of person that is never loyal to just one brand. I’m constantly trying new products so I find some real gems and some real flops with every brand I try!  There are a few brands that have a special place in my heart though…

Revlon (favorite products include their lipsticks, Colorstay foundations)

Wet n Wild (love the quality for the low price!  Their MegaLast lipsticks are tops!)

NYX (there are just so many products to choose from, and almost everything is great quality)

Those are my TOP 3 *of the moment*.  You know it will change again ;)

onedirectionyeah1 asked: Hey, this is a general question, but what is exactly a CC cream and BB cream?

CC Creams and BB Creams are really just glorified tinted moisturizers.  They provide coverage and skincare and sun protection all in one, and are meant to be an easy one-step base.  Generally they won’t have as much coverage as most foundations, or as many skin benefits as real skincare products, but they’re a great mixture.

The difference between CC cream and BB cream is very small - the main difference is going to be the type of skincare benefit you get from them.  CC Creams, which are Color Corrective Creams, are mostly for evening out discoloration in the skin, whether that is dark spot correction or redness relief.  BB Creams, also called Blemish or Beauty Balms, are usually more oil controlling and pore minimizing.  The amount of coverage and the finish of your BB or CC cream will depend on the brand!

The Stila liquid eyeliner is definitely fantastic.  It’s a felt tip liner that is easy to apply and doesn’t smear or smudge.  For a much lower price (try $3!) you can get a very similar liner… the ELF Waterproof Eyeliner Pen.  Same style of applicator (just a tad bit shorter) and a very nice formula.

sacredsigh asked: i've always had really coarse and unruly eyebrow hairs and i have no idea how to make them stop being bushy and unmanageable. any tips?

Hey there!  Don’t worry, there are lots of options for calming down brows that seem to have a mind of their own!  I’ve got a couple of tips for you that can instantly tame your brows and to help them become more manageable over time, too!

First, I’ll recommend that you actually start conditioning your brows!  Just as actual conditioner helps to soften frizzy, coarse hair on your head, using a conditioning product on your brows will help them become easier to manipulate.  I recommend just rubbing a little bit of olive oil or coconut oil on your brows every night - since these oils are natural, they won’t cause breakouts or oiliness in your skin, and they don’t contain any fragrance or dye like hair conditioner that could irritate your eyes.  The oil will soften the hair and skin, making your rough brows more pliable!

To help you instantly get your brows in order without necessarily filling them in or struggling with lots of products, I HIGHLY recommend a wax pencil.  These are generally colorless and are easy to use.  Wax will really hold your brows in place, and the pencil will easily coat all of your brow hairs and push them into position.  You can put brow color over or under wax pencils, and you’ll still be able to move your brow hairs where you want.

image

Top to bottom:  Milani Brow Shaping Pencil, $5 [Found Here]  :::   NYX Eyebrow Shaper, $9 [Found Here]   :::  Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Fix Pencil, $18 [Found Here]

When you’re actually shaping your brows, trimming the hairs will have more of an effect than plucking will.  Brush your eyebrow hairs upwards, and then use trimming scissors to create a clean line along the top of your brow by trimming some of the extra length.

I hope this helps you, and everyone else who has brows that do their own thing!! :)

dreamingofparadise asked: I feel so weird with wide set eyes, I'm like the only one in my family like that. What are some tips to make them look closer? Or not as awkward

Wide set eyes are very common, don’t feel like you’re the black sheep!  It’s just more of a recessive gene, so it might not appear as much in your family.

Most makeup techniques are actually designed to make the eyes appear wider apart, or more elongated (like the cat-eye!)  To make eyes appear closer together, you just have to switch the typical “dark color on the outer corner” to “dark color on the INNER corner”.  Creating more emphasis on the inner part of the crease (nearer to your nose rather than your ear) will create the illusion of eyes that are closer together, because the darker shade in that area will visually pull that area inwards.  So you would apply your lighter color all over the lid, a medium shade in the crease as usual, and then deepen up the inner part of the crease with a darker shade.  It won’t matter what colors you use as long as you have your three shades in varying depths!

Here’s a little diagram (source: luuux) that should help you visualize the placement of shadows better:

image

If the rest of you are unsure if your eyes are wide set, close set, or normal, you need only do a rough measurement.  If the width of your eye is the same as the amount of space between your eyes, you have a balanced eye placement.  If the space between your eyes is larger than the width of your eyes, then you have wide set eyes; if the space is smaller, your eyes are close set.

Hope this helps you!  Good luck, and embrace your eye shape!

I am looking for a good foundation that keeps me matte, has full coverage, and is pale enough for me (because NOTHING is). I am considering the kat von d tattoo lock it foundation or the makeup forever mat velvet plus. which one should i choose? which one is paler or has better coverage? thanks xx

Hi there!  Thank you so so much!

Finding super-light foundations can be really difficult, because the undertone can vary so much!  The two foundations you mentioned are both fantastic, especially if you like full coverage and have oily skin.

image

Kat Von D Lock-It Tattoo Foundation - $34

Kat Von D Lock It is my holy grail foundation.  This is going to be the most full coverage foundation you’ll find, and it’s extremely matte.  The Make Up For Ever Mat Velvet+ is just a step less in the coverage department, but their lightest shade is a bit lighter than Kat Von D’s (since she discontinued her lightest shade this spring).  Both are extremely buildable too!  But from personal experience, I’d probably say to go with KVD.  Her brand is fragrance and paraben free and the coverage is unbeatable!

Hope that helps!  Much love!

yolkyolkyolk asked: hi! may I know what's the difference between moisturizer and face lotion? thankss!

Helloo, of course you may!

Moisturizer is sort of like the all-encompassing industry term for face lotions and creams.  So, a face lotion IS a moisturizer.  A face cream is also a moisturizer.  Generally, “lotions” are slightly more liquidy than a cream, which would be a thicker, whipped texture.  Both are designed to hydrate the skin and create a balanced, healthy complexion!  It’s just whatever you want to call it, kind of like how some people call foundations “cover up”.  Hope that helps you!
