unspicylatino asked: Advice for covering up stretch marks?

Covering up any type of scar, especially a pitted scar like a stretch mark, is rather difficult.  My best advice is to disguise the area with some self tanning products.  Self tanners will help to even out the skin tone so that the scars won’t stand out as much because they are a different shade.

If you want to go all-out and completely cover stretch marks, get yourself  a really good, silicone-based primer (one designed for filling pores will do the trick) and apply this generously to the afflicted area.  The primer will help smooth the skin and fill in the pitted scars.  Now you can apply makeup or self-tan over your skin and the indentations of the stretch marks won’t be as visible!  :)

elysenicol123 asked: Do you know a dupe for philosophy hope in a jar

Actually yes, I do!

image

Philosophy Hope in a Jar Moisturizer - $42 for 2oz

VS

image

Neutrogena Healthy Skin Face Lotion - $12 for 2.5oz

I was testing this the other day and it reminded me of something that I’d used before on my skin.  It actually wasn’t until I read this question that I realized - d’oh!  This is just like Hope in a Jar!  Hope is a very popular moisturizer with a cult-like following behind it.  It’s really a very basic moisturizer, and its only special ingredient is Alpha Hydroxy Acid, which helps speed up cell turnover and keeps pores clear.  It’s meant to be an anti-aging moisturizer for all ages.

The Neutrogena Healthy Skin Face Lotion has AHA as well as vitamin B5 and E for added moisture.  This moisturizer also has SPF 15.  I prefer the pump packaging of the Neutrogena lotion to Hope in a Jar’s jar, and I obviously prefer the tiny price point as well.

Hope that helps!

vergeofamentalbreak-down asked: Hey can you please recommend a good DRY SKIN drugstore foundation? Thanks! :)

Hi there!  Yes, I certainly can!  It’s interesting how almost everyone asks about products for oily skin, isn’t it?!  Here’s some products for my dry-skinned beauties!

image

Revlon Age Defying Liquid Foundation - $9

This is probably my favorite drugstore foundation for dry skin.  I love the coverage it has, and even though it is hydrating, it doesn’t make your skin look or feel greasy.  This has SPF 20

[Buy]

image

Neutrogena Healthy Skin Liquid Makeup - $10

For a large part of my life I exclusively used this foundation, and to this day I still like it.  This is a lightweight foundation with medium coverage, but it doesn’t have the staying power of the Revlon one.  This is supposedly full of “antioxidants” to help correct uneven skin tone and moisturize.  Also has SPF 20

[Buy]

image

L’Oreal True Match Lumi Healthy Luminous Makeup - $10

This is a great foundation that instantly makes your skin LOOK hydrated even if it isn’t.  I’d say that this has light to medium coverage but it’s very buildable, and it has a gorgeous glow to it.  This has SPF 20.

[Buy]

image

Almay Line Smoothing Makeup - $9

This is my most recent dry-skin-find.  It tells you that it hydrates all day right on the front of the bottle, how convenient!  I like this one for sensitive skin types.  This also has light to medium coverage, and average staying power.  Contains SPF 15.

[Buy]

Also, please please PLEASE make sure you’re using a good moisturizer underneath your makeup!  Even if you don’t have dry skin you should be doing this (yes, my oily skinned friends, you need moisturizer too).  A moisturizer will help create balance.  If you find that your skin gets flakey and has patches that are emphasized by makeup, make sure that you are exfoliating and moisturizing beforehand.  Exfoliating will help get rid of that dry, dead skin and will help your foundation go on smoothly.  If your patches are really stubborn, use a primer with a silicone base underneath your foundation over the problem areas!

Hope this helps!

Rimmel’s Mod Revival + My Photoshoot!

image

image

Yes, believe it or not… that’s me!  Recently I was invited by Rimmel London to help promote the new Retro Glam cosmetic collection.  I spent an amazing week in New York discovering my inner 60’s diva, resulting in the awesome photoshoot you’re glimpsing here!  Retro Glam is all about bringing back the Mod scene - an iconic time in the fashion and beauty industries.

For years I’ve been a fan of Rimmel - since my first experiments with makeup, actually - and they’ve consistently come up with trendy and effective formulations.  This year they’re pulling inspiration from one of the biggest fashion revivals,  and they have created products that really channel the glamour and intrigue of the Twiggy era.

sweaterbelle asked: How do you get mascara to not smudge though out the day??

Other than getting yourself a better mascara, there are a lot of ways to help prevent smudging!  Because I have really deep set eyes, my mascara always used to smudge along my brow bone and ruin my eyeshadow… very annoying!  So I know your pain!

The first thing I recommend is using some eyeshadow primer… even if you’re not wearing eyeshadow.  Primer helps to control the oils on your lids, and it’s the oils that will ruin your makeup if you’re not careful!  Even waterproof mascara can’t stand up to oil (because we use oil to remove it). So apply a small amount of a good eye primer all over your lids and along your lower lash line to help keep your eyeshadow, mascara, and even eyeliner in place for a lot longer!  I recommend this one -

image

NYX HD Eyeshadow Base - $7

This is my current favorite.  I feel like it helps my eyeshadow stand out as much as possible, and does the best job of keeping my lids from getting oily!

[Buy]

If mascara smearing at your outer corners or lower lash line is the problem, try using a mattifying setting powder around your eye after all of your makeup is applied.  Use a small eyeshadow brush and pack on the powder, which is also going to help prevent oiliness.

image

Essence All About Matt Fixing Compact Powder - $3

This affordable, translucent powder is easy to keep in your bag, and won’t disturb the look of your makeup because it’s colorless.  It also helps your makeup stay in place, so use it all over!

[Buy]

And my last recommendation is to perhaps invest in a really good waterproofing makeup seal.  They have mascara-type ones - they are clear, and you apply it as a topcoat over any mascara.  Anastasia Beverly Hills has a really nice one - you can find that at Sephora!

melissaaaboo asked: is it true that foundations with spf makes you look white in pictures? if so. which drugstore foundations do you recommend?

Yes, it’s true!  Not in ALL cases, because it depends on the brand and the formulation of the SPF in the foundation, but if you see your face shining back kind of pale in any flash photography, it’s most likely the SPF in your foundation.

There are a few good foundations at the drugstore without SPF, but honestly most have SOME kind of sun protection in them.  Not all of them flash back, as I mentioned above, and it really takes some trial and error to figure it out.  I recommend watching some of ItsJudyTime’s first impressions videos on YouTube - she does a flash test during her review so you can see if it gives a white cast or not!

Because I’m not going to pick and choose my foundations depending on whether or not I want to have my picture taken, I use a powder over top to minimize flashback.  Translucent setting powders don’t really work for this - only powder foundations without SPF will.

vackid asked: Hello, i have acne and use the kat von d tattoo concealer to cover spots, redness, and scarring but i'm in the process of clearing my skin. I want to stop using a heavy makeup, would you suggest the naked skin beauty balm by urban decay?

Hello!  First of all, good for you - it is really difficult to separate yourself from heavy makeup, which can be like a comfort zone.  It is for me, anyway!

As for the Urban Decay Beauty Balm, I wouldn’t really suggest it for your purpose.  Mainly because it covers absolutely nothing and feels almost pointless to me in anything other than a primer.  As a primer it’s wonderful, because it makes your skin feel really silky smooth.

image

Urban Decay Naked Skin Beauty Balm - $34

Find it online!

If you’re looking for something lighter and better for your skin, I’d recommend the Cover Fx CC Cream or Mineral Powder.  They’re two very different products, and honestly I’d go for the powder, but that might not be appealing to you if you’ve been using liquid products.  Cover Fx is an amazing brand for sensitive or problem skin types and they have a great variety of products.  I like the CC Cream because it’s light and a little goes a very long way, plus there are amazing skincare benefits.  The powder is really lightweight and evens out most discoloration without looking or feeling cakey.

stuckinthemood asked: I'm about to go to the beach for spring break and I want to wear some coverage while I'm there but don't want a heavy foundation. Should I get a BB or CC cream and what is the best drugstore kind?

Lucky you!  I’m craving some waves and sunshine right about now!

I’d recommend packing the Garnier BB Cream in your bag!  I brought it with me to Myrtle Beach last year and it worked really well for me.  It has great coverage that’s incredibly lightweight and comfortable even in a hot climate.  It also has a bit of moisture and SPF 20 to protect you from the sun!

image

Garnier BB Miracle Skin Perfector Oil Free - $15

Find here online!

I do recommend still bringing along a water-resistant sunscreen to wear underneath your BB cream, because the makeup won’t last quite as long.  You will need to reapply both as suggested by the packaging if you’re in the sun (usually every 2 hours) to keep yourself protected.

On another note, BB and CC creams are very much alike.  I tend to recommend BB creams for those of you who have younger skin, and/or need oil control, pore refining, or help with blemishes.  Not all BB creams cater to these needs however, and it’s important to read reviews to see if they’ll work for your issues.  CC creams are usually “color correctors”, and help fix dark spots or issues with the evenness of complexion.

Hope this recommendation works for you, and have a fun trip!
