April ‘13 Hits and Misses!
They say April showers bring May flowers.. well I sure hope so! This last week of April has certainly made me feel like summer is on it’s way finally, and I really can’t wait. All month long I’ve been obsessed with glowy skin and barely-there makeup. I’ve tried a few new products, and fallen back in love with some oldies as well! Hope you enjoy this month’s beauty Hits & Misses… click to see what I’m loving and leaving!
Jesse’s Girl Lipsticks - $4
Jesse’s Girl is a cosmetic company started by the YouTube beauty guru Julie G. You can find Jesse’s Girl products online or at Rite Aid stores! These lipsticks immediately stood out to me because they come in the same packaging as NYX Matte lipsticks.. so I naturally wanted to make a comparison, as well as just test out my first Jesse’s Girl products. The packaging is really convenient, in my opinion, because you can always tell the exact color of the lipstick because of the clear band through the center of the tube! These lipsticks are different from the NYX matte lipsticks… in that they aren’t matte! They are rather creamy (the ones I tried at least) and are nicely pigmented. I loved all the colors (12 total) and the price is really great as well! If you’re looking for a really great quality, affordable lipstick line, this is it.
NYX Slide On Glide On.. Pencil Eyeliners - $8
We’re talking Holy Grail status with this eyeliner! This pencil offers everything that you could ever want in a pencil… it is smooth and opaque, glides on like butter, creates precise lines, can be blended out to a smokey look, and guess what? It lasts ALL DAY! Not kidding. I might go so far as to say it lasts better… well, I think as good as Milani Liquif’eye. The two are very similar! However these pencils come in 18 different colors. I use them on the waterline, on the lashline, on the lids, and as bases for powder eyeshadows. My favorite colors are Golden Bronze and Azure!
Milani Baked Blush - $7
These are one of my rediscovered favorites this month! Since I’ve been so into glowy skin lately, I’ve been reaching more and more for baked-type blush. They are nicely pigmented and blend into the skin effortlessly, but the best part is the beautiful sheen! It creates an airbrushed effect on your cheeks. These Milani baked blushes are the best ones I own, greatly exceeding the quality of many high end blushes in my collection. The colors are stunning, the staying power is wondrous, and the price is just right. ”Luminoso” is said to be a close dupe of Benefit’s infamous blush, “Coralista”.
Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula Swivel Stick - $4
This is my all-time favorite lip product. If your lips are dry, flaking, chapped… or if they’re perfectly normal, this stick will make them feel like angel butts. That is a good thing, if you were wondering. This is a huge stick full of cocoa butter goodness, and makes your lips smooth and soft without feeling waxy and stiff, coating them in oil or other yucky stuff. Swivel Stick also works on skin.. people use it for everything from scars, to stretch marks, to cracked heels - although I wouldn’t use the same one on your lips as on your feet, haha! One stick will last you for ages, and it puts all other lip balms to shame.
Big Sexy Hair Powder Play Volumizing & Texturizing Powder - $8-$16
I received a small sample size of this unique hair product in my April Ipsy bag (http://ipsy.com) At first I didn’t know how I’d use this, because I generally have a decent amount of volume to my hair anyway. But I am really loving this! I always love big hair, and this delivers… it adds texture and fullness to any style. It is a powder that you sprinkle into the hair and fluff through, and it helps create and hold volume. I always use this before I tease my hair, or after I curl it to give me killer Diana Ross-esqe locks. It feels very strange once you begin to work it into your hair.. it cools and feels almost liquidy. But it disappears and doesn’t leave any powdery residue, on light or dark hair. Very good stuff, for thick or thin hair!
Color Oops Extra Strength Hair Color Remover - $10
As you may or may not know, early this month I made the transition from a redhead back to my “natural” blonde hair color! Even though I loved the red, I wanted my blonde look back for summer (and so did my significant other). I put it off for a couple of weeks because I was terrified of going from red to blonde… images of orange, dye-resistant hair kept cycling through my subconscious. But on a trip to Ulta I decided to go for Color Oops. It was like a miracle! Although it didn’t go back to my original platinum blonde color (more like a bright yellow), it completely removed all of the red dye from my hair. I used two boxes, because my hair is rather long, and I was very pleased with the results. Color Oops is not bleach, but it sucks out the color molecules, causing them to turn clear and to be able to be washed out of the hair. THIS ONLY WORKS on light hair that was dyed dark. If you’re trying to get a light hair color out of your dark hair, this won’t work, because it doesn’t work on bleached colors. BUT for me, it was a godsend, and I was able to dye my hair to my desired blonde shade after a couple of hours with minimal damage (nothing a good hair mask couldn’t fix).
Wet n Wild Megalast Liquid Lipcolor - $3
It is with great regret that I must put these as a Miss product! I want to love them, and there are many aspects that I do wholeheartedly approve of. But the negatives are such that I cannot overlook them. These are liquid lipsticks - apply them as you would a gloss, but they dry to look like a lipstick. The colors are really nice, in particular the reds (which I would compare to LimeCrime Velvetines) For the most part, each shade is opaque and dries matte. However they are like tar on the lips.. in order to make them work, you have to apply them over lip balm, and you can’t touch your lips together for quite a while, or the lipstick will all stick together and end up looking like you have dead skin all over your lips. You also can’t blot your lips (which is annoying, because the applicator tends to apply too much to your lips and the lipstick comes off on everything). If you somehow manage to apply them nicely, they won’t come off. They DON’T come off. My first application I scrubbed for a good five minutes before resorting to olive oil to remove these lipsticks. They are almost great, but fall short. I’ll still try working with these, because when they work, they look awesome.
Too Faced Tanning Bed in a Tube - $28
I got this a few months ago and honestly, I’ve used up almost all of it. I really loved it in the winter months, when I was covered up and just wanted a bit of a boost for a formal occasion or something like that. It smells awesome, kind of like pina coladas, and the color is simply gorgeous. It is an instant tanning product, and provides a golden-bronze glow as soon as you rub it in. Tanning Bed in a Tube also is very moisturizing, and feels nice to apply. So as I said, I was loving it.. until I decided to wear a skirt in the rain. This stuff washes off immediately, and doesn’t create a gradual tan on your skin at all. My legs were left streaky and nasty looking, and I was very embarrassed. This also makes my shower look like an oompa loompa exploded in it. So close, and yet not quite.
